An Independent Educational Evaluation (IEE) is an evaluation of a student’s educational needs, abilities, or challenges that is conducted by a qualified professional who is not employed by the school district. Parents may request an IEE if they disagree with the results or conclusions of a school’s evaluation. The purpose of an IEE is to provide an unbiased, second opinion about the child’s learning, behavior, or developmental needs, which can help determine appropriate supports, services, or educational placements. In many cases, the school district may be required to consider the results of the IEE when making decisions about the student’s educational program.
